The Religion, Culture, Politics and History on the Sino-Tibetan Borderlands: From the Late Middle Age to Present Day
The talk with a documentary film directed by Prof. Tsongkha himself will present a social, religious, and cultural history of the Sino-Tibetan borderlands from late middle age to present day. Beginning with historical archives from the explorations of the Western explorers such as J.E. Rock, conducted before 1920s, physical comparison between past and present locations will be highlighted. A discussion will follow.
Prof. Yongdrol Tsongkha is founding director of the Institute for Tibeto-Burman $ Altaic Studies, and Full Professor and “Leading Expert” for Tibetan and Ethnic studies at Lanchow University, and has a visiting Professor and Research Associate in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies and Departments of Anthropology at Indiana University since 1998 . He has been actively involved in preserving and restoring some of the endangered Tibetan and Mongolian traditions in the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau since 2003. He is also a film maker who has directed a documentary named "Life among the People of Choni" which has been showed by Gansu TV(PRC,2007/2008), Canadian Shaw Multicultural Channel 119(Canada, Oct27,2009), Maysles Institute Cinema(New York, July7, 2009) ,New Asia Film Festival (Canada May 25,2008), Cinevolution Media Society(Canada, Aug 12,2009) ,Kunming Beichen Cinema (April 22,2010), and Sichuan TV Festival International in November 2009 ( won "Gold Panda" Awards for Documentary in November 6 2009) etc. He has been invited to give talks at many prestigious academic Institutions which include University of Virginia, Colombia University, Harvard University , Simon Fraser University and Waseda University as well as many top universities in PRC.
